PROJECT #1 (Non-Linguistic Localization: Icons)
DUE: September 12, 2001
DESCRIPTION:Your primary task is to design a new icon (or several if you get the hang of it) using an icon editor. This will also be an opportunity to learn about icons. This project is made up of 4 subassignments.
STEPS
1. Download and Install this IconEditor program.
2. If you do not have a Zip File Unzipper (WinZip) Click Here. Download and use WinZip it to install the icon editor.
3. Sub Assignment #1: Once the icon editor is installed, follow the instructions to create a new icon. You can make a brand new icon from scratch, out of an existing icon by altering it, or you can find or scan an image and use a section of it.
4. Sub Assignment #2: Change the icon used for Internet Explorer to your new icon. The IE icon on the desktop is a shortcut icon. The following method will change it to a new icon of your own design or choosing.
  • Click on the IE Shortcut with the right mouse button. Go down and click on "Properties" in the Dialog Box that appears.
  • The Properties window will come up. You'll need to click on the "Shortcut" Tab.
  • Once at the Shortcut tab find and click on "Change Icon. "
  • A window will pop up and you'll need to locate and select an Icon from your hard drive. Once you've selected your icon, just click "Apply" and then click ok.
5. Sub Assignment #3: Some icons are not shortcut icons, and cannot be changed by this method. By doing internet research please describe for me, or give me the internet URL of a description of, a way to change so-called standard icons (Recycle Bin, My Computer, etc.) to new icons. Find or create a new recycle bin icon and make it active on your desktop using the method.
6. Sub Assignment #4: Every program file has a default icon. This icon is not a shortcut icon that can be changed by the method described above (see #4). Find iexplore.exe in the Program Files folder of you hard drive. Notice that method #4 cannot be used to change the icon assigned by default to this program. Why is this? Where does the icon used as a default icon for this (or any program) come from?  Save this program (JustSomeProgram.EXE)to the C:/Windows/Temp folder of your hard drive and and open the EXE file in the icon editor program. What do you see. Can replace it with your custom icon? What happens?
