Welcome to the Institute for Applied Linguistics
The Institute for Applied Linguistics (IAL) is a research and training unit within the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State. Affiliated with the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies, the Institute and its faculty coordinate the four-year Bachelor of Science Program in Translation, the 2-year Master of Arts in Translation and the Ph.D. in Translation Studies.
These translation degree programs focus on translation research skills, specialized translation, computer-assisted terminology and translation, software localization and project management for the language industry, but are also designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for skill development in humanistic translation and translation studies. The IAL's B.S. and M.A. curricula provide a firm foundation in translation studies and translation practice for students in French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish while the Ph.D. program provides advanced training in translation studies and language informatics.
A center for research in translation studies and in several areas of language engineering (computer-assisted translation and terminology, multilingual document management and cross-language information exchange and retrieval), the IAL is one of America's leading university-based translator training programs and the only comprehensive B.S. to Ph.D. program.
Other Programs in Applied Linguistics affiliated with the Institute include the Program in Foreign Language Pedagogy in the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies and Programs in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language in the Department of English.

- International Standard project initiative As part of an ISO International Standard initiative, IAL member Sue Ellen Wright has spearheaded a major international project involving several Translation Studies PhD students. She serves as chair of the Data Category Registry Board (DCRB) for the ISOcat metadata registry. The project, which involves the creation of a component linked to the creation of the Semantic Web, is being conducted in coordination with the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and is funded by the European Union CLARIN project. - Posted Apr. 23, 2010 - Lecture by Peter Bush, Monday April 11, 2010, 3:00 p.m. Sat Peter Bush, an award-winning literary translator from Catalan, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, has translated over fifty novels and screenplays including Pedro Almodovar’s The Flower of My Secret and numerous thrillers from Spain and Spanish America. The lecture is sponsored by the IAL and the Wick Poetry Center.
- Posted Apr. 7, 2010 - A & S Translation Professor and Graduate Student Participate in a Mammography Teaching Project to Jinotepe, Nicaragua Radiology Mammography International, an Akron-based non-profit organization, recently completed a successful teaching project in the Regional Hospital Santiago in Jinotepe, Nicaragua, with the collaboration of a Kent State University’s translation faculty member and student.
